The internship is an on-the-job work experience related to your personal interests, career aspirations, and major field of study. If you elect to receive academic credit for the internship, you may be required to pay tuition for the experience. Students should seek out accounting internships. Opportunities will frequently be posted or made otherwise known to accounting majors by various methods, including through emails and by website, as well as through the Center for Advising and Career Exploration (CACE) but students should not feel limited to these sources alone. All internship positions require an application and interview process with the employer as with any other employment opportunity. When choosing your internship, please keep in mind the following: You must complete and submit the Internship Contract and Goals & Objectives documents to the Department Chair as soon as internship position has been secured. Your internship must cover a period of no less than eight weeks. Your internship must cover a minimum of 150 hours of internship work. This time does not include travel to and from your place(s) of internship. Your internship may be either paid or unpaid. Your internship must be approved by the accounting department chair. You cannot complete an internship with a company for which you have already been working unless the internship represents new and expanded responsibilities (see the Department Chair for more information). Internships for academic credit will earn no more than three (3) credits for AC 398 Internship in Accounting. To be eligible for the internship you must have: Prior to the beginning of their internship experience, accounting majors must have completed at least two major courses in Accounting (six credits and C- or better in each. AC 211 and AC 212 do not count). Completed all core (pre-major) business courses. Have earned at least an overall GPA of 2.75 and in the major (which includes pre-major courses) at the time the student applies for internship credit. 91Ʒ Connecticut State University School of Business Department of Accounting Securing an Internship for Credit Page 2 of 2 To register for the internship course, you must: Secure an internship with an employer where your primary work responsibilities are accounting related. Complete the Internship Contract including supervisors signature. Complete the Internship Learning Objectives page of the Internship Contract. Obtain and submit an employer-provided job description and the supervisor's business card from the company. Submit the Internship Contract, Internship Learning Objectives, job description and business card to the Department Chair as soon as internship position has been secured. The Department Chair will discuss the internship with you; review the forms, obtain the appropriate School of Business signatures, and register you into the course. 91Ʒ Connecticut State University School of Business Department of Accounting Internship Goals The Accounting Departments Internship Goals are: To provide students the opportunity to experience a professional accounting practice to apply their education in a real-work setting and to build essential professional competencies to be successful in their chosen career path. Internship Objectives The Accounting Departments Internship Objectives are to: Provide students with hands-on experience in an accounting environment; Expose students to industry specific software and tools that enhance technical proficiency; Improve student oral/written communication skills; Allow students to participate in work groups typical in a professional environment; and Advance each students professional development and maturity. Internship Assessment (Grading) Criteria The students will be evaluated on: Quality, completeness, and timeliness of a student weekly Learning Journals describing their experience, supervisors evaluation, and team interactions; Quality, completeness, and timeliness of a students Internship Report illustrating the task performed and how the experience enable the student to reach their own goals; and Internship Supervisor Verification in the which supervisor confirms the hours worked by the student at the internship. 91Ʒ Connecticut State University School of Business - Department of Accounting Internship Academic Responsibilities You keep a weekly Learning Journal in which you report on your work assignments, your progress toward learning goals. It should be emailed to your internship advisor no later than Monday of the following week. Only the internship advisor has access to your learning journal. At the end of your internship you must submit a five (5) to seven (7) page Internship Report to the faculty advisor who may share parts of it with your internship supervisor. The internship advisor grades your work after receiving both the Internship Report and the Internship Evaluation form from your internship supervisor. The end of internship, the Internship Report should discuss: The organization for which you worked. Talk about its goals, its accounting functions, and how your project and job fit into the organization. The tasks you performed, how well they matched those planned in your Job Description, and how they helped you reach your learning goals. What accounting tasks and processes does the organization do well? Which not so well? Recommendations to the organization on improvements? What did you learn about (1) yourself, (2) working with others? What did you learn about the profession of accounting? What did you learn about the organizations domain? All papers should be double spaced, grammar-checked, spell-checked, and PROOFREAD before submitting them to your internship advisor.  If the student is registered full-time, there will be no additional tuition charge; if the student is registered part-time, the tuition will be for one 3-credit course. For summer internships the tuition is for one 3-credit course.
