The purpose of the exit interview is to help the BMS faculty assess the learning outcomes for the department as well as student performance in the major. All departments at CCSU are required to assess their academic programs on a yearly basis. In addition the exit interview provides an opportunity for students to provide candid feedback to the faculty about their experience in the BMS department and their overall experience at CCSU. EXIT PORTFOLIO PROCESS: There are two components to the Exit Portfolio Process. The first part is a 30 minute written response to one open-ended question. The question will be selected at random from a collection of questions written by the BMS faculty. The second part of the process is an informal 20-30 minute interview and portfolio review. Interviews normally take place at the end of the semester during final exam week. At this time students will review their portfolio and their exit exam with the faculty. In addition students will be asked a series of questions designed to allow the student to provide constructive feedback about the program and the university. PREPARING FOR THE EXIT PORTFOLIO Step 1: Prepare for 30 minute exit assessment question You will be given 30 minutes to answer one open ended question (see attached). The actual question that you will answer will be chosen at random. All students will not receive the same question. Schedule a date and time to sit for the exit assessment question. You will have several opportunities to schedule a 30 minute time block to answer the selected question. Sign-up sheets with dates and times will be posted outside the BMS office. Step 2: Prepare for the Exit Interview. Ensure that your portfolio is up to date (see the Portfolio Checklist for complete details). Essentially your portfolio is a collection of documents that reflect your accomplishments during your undergraduate career. It should be something that you would want to bring to an interview as a potential job candidate or for admission into an advanced degree program. There is no specific format as to how you arrange/compile your portfolio. Items can be put into a 3 ring binder or folder. Your portfolio will be returned to you at the end of the Exit Interview Sign up for an exit interview session. Towards the end of the semester a sign-up sheet is posted outside of the BMS office with days and times for interviews. In the past the date and times have been on the reading days and/or during final exam week. With the exception of assembling your portfolio, there is no other preparation for the exit interview. The exit interview is informal and is really designed to allow you to provide feedback about the program and your experience here at CCSU. Your input is essential in guiding the development of our BMS curriculum. EXIT ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS The exit assessment questions are designed to assess your understanding of the core concepts introduced and reinforced in the BMS curriculum. The textbook from your BMS 201, Essential cell biology, by Alberts et al, or a similar text should suffice in helping you prepare for these questions that will test your foundational knowledge in Biomolecular science, including an understanding of: The relationship between the properties of macromolecules and cellular activities, The relationship between cellular activities and biological responses, Cell metabolism, chemical composition, physiochemical and functional organization of organelles, Gene replication, expression, regulation and mutation, Cell signaling, trafficking and differentiation, and Contemporary approaches and techniques used in modern cell and molecular biology.
