Subcommittee Reports (Remember, please send your sub-committee reports to Joanne DiPlacido, Carolyn Fallahi, & Krystal Rich before our next scheduled meeting). a. Job Place Bullying and Sexual Harassment January 25, 2012 Present: Carolyn Fallahi, Eva Vrdojak, Kathy Hermes, Kate McGrath, Meg Levvis Absent/Excused: Sally Lesik, Jacqueline Cobbina-Boivin, Susan Gilmore Contact Rosa and ask her about the sexual harassment policy and what is happening with that. We want a copy of the current policy and once their changes are made, we will make ours. Kate will call Rosa and ask. Sexual assault poster. Put together a poster on x, y, z . Put together the poster on what to do if you are assaulted. Vicky Magley about the study at UConn. Kathy contacted her and have not heard back. President of UConn was going to do a study about workplace bullying. Want to get a similar study for here. There is a search for a new HR director. It would be nice to not only think up some questions for the candidates in the meeting, but also this might be something a new HR director could take on. Possibility of a bullying survey. Kate and Kathy did a questionnaire some years ago. Did a survey monkey. Got bogged down in wording. There was a national study. Zogbee pole. In 2007. Also one at Minnesota and pulled questions from there. Zobbee one is proprietary. U. of Minnesota did one. Kathy wasnt able to find out any information from UConns study yet. They were trying to stay away from protected class. Got bogged down there. What classes they may fit into. Maybe we dont need to use identifiers at all. Put a definition of what bullying and abusive relationships are in the survey. Arizona State University has done some research on bullying. Jess Alberts. HR. Questions for the candidates. They are coming at the end of March. Good to have CCW represented is a good thing. Also good to have people there to ask about bullying and sexual harassment. There will be one sort of phone question on mutual respect and civility. That does not cover abusive conduct. Especially where the union contract has no clause about abusive conduct between union members. Part of the test for the HR person is how well they will work with union members. What kind of questions could we ask? Put on the agenda for the 13th. CCW maybe has a number of questions they want to ask. What will you do if someone in the administration is accused of a sexual assault? Can you give us an example of what youve done in the past and how you handled x, y, z. Job description on-line on HR website. Have to have HR experience. Preferred qualifications . Advanced degree and experience in a public university. Asked requirements include working with collective bargaining, etc. Needs 7 years experience with increasing responsibilities. Have you ever had a situation where people are all in the same bargaining unit, there is not civility policy, and there is no wording in the contract about abusive conduct, and one person is bullying the other. What would you do? If someone is being harassed at work, what is done? Depends if it is illegal harassment or not. Mediation is a bad idea. It is intimate violence. You dont put someone being bullied in the same room and say work it out. Mediation doesnt work usually. Incivility policies from other universities in the report. Lets come up with recommendations. Legal harassment: in employment law there are protected classes. If you are being harassed because you are a woman, that is illegal. If I just hate you and I belittle you and sabotage your work, and do this on a day to day basis, this is not hostile environment. Not doing it because in a protected class, doing it because I hate you. Bully by nature.. exert control. Kathy will send the civility statement. There is an antiviolence policy based on the law in the state of Connecticut. The antiviolence law and policy could potentially cover psychological violence. That is so rare for court cases. It has to be so extreme. There is a case in Indiana. A doctor screamed at a nurse in such a way that she had PTSD. That is psychological violence. In some situations, people need to go directly to the police. Questionnaire: concern with the bullying. Definition important. Strong-handed management or more involved? Benefit of the survey, may also help them to realize that they are being bullied. Partly institutional. Workplace bullying institute.. good definition. See if we can find a definition. They make the point that it needs to be repeated behavior usually. Next Meeting: Wednesday, February 29th, 12:15 p.m., in Carolyns office. b. Scholarship Committee Information is posted. Deadline is approaching in the next few days. c. Sexual Assault Protocol The committee reviewed the changes to the Student Code of Conduct and felt that most of the changes that had been recommended by the committee had been made. The committee members felt that it might be time to change the mission of the committee to be focused awareness and prevention efforts in the area of sexual violence. The committee was also curious about who sits on the hearing committee and wanted to invite Chris Dukes in to get a better understanding of the judicial process on campus. Rosa also indicated that the sexual harassment policy and the complaint form have been updated. d. Work Life/ Family Balance February 6, 2012 Over the past few months, CCW's subcommittee for Work/Family Life Balance worked with members of the Child Care Task Force, the Ruth Boyea Women's Center and the Early Learning Program @ CCSU to draft a proposal to create a child care drop-in center on campus that would address the short-term child care needs of faculty, staff and students. The proposal was also read by members of the Student Government Association which voted to endorse it on February 1st, 2012.The final proposal was submitted to the Facilities and Management Committee on February 2nd, 2012. In the wake of requests by CCW, the CTTF and RB Women's Center, the ELP also submitted a proposal to Facilities regarding renovating and expanding the current ELP location so that they can offer infant and toddler care (not now currently provided by the center) and expand their pre-K program. This proposal is currently under review. We are in the process of identifying additional means of promoting the Work/Life Balance resources and information provided on campus. To that end, CCW provided funds for Work/Life Balance posters that promote the Work/Life Balance web site and Facebook page. h. Next meeting: March 7, 2012, 1:30 p.m., Carolyns office (216 Marcus White Hall) i.Womens Health Education Sub-committee Scheduled to meet in March to talk about our place in the 5K. Also, Leah Glaser brought information about workshops that her cousin does on breast cancer. Committee will talk about this idea as a possibility for next fall. j. Mens Initiative Sub-committee February 6, 2012 Present: Jason Sikorski, Carolyn Fallahi, Susan Gilmore, Sally Lesik, Krystal Rich, Kim DeMichelle Guest: JoAnne DiPlacido Excused/Absent: Bobbi Koplowitz; Jacqueline Cobbina-Boivin Research with Male Athletes: Complaints; stigmatized, stereotypes athletes. People think that we cant change this population. 100% male athletes forced to attend. Here are some of the preliminary results from the study. 100% thought methods of presentation useful. 100% time spent workshop worthwhile 100% comments and questions could be asked, etc. Overwhelming liked and enjoyed the workshop Some of the dont knows. Didnt do any of these things anyways. Because dont do these things 100% more student athletes should be exposed/ know about this workshop; 80% presenter could be trusted; 100% presenter respects us; 100% presenter cared about them as human beings. Bring up these because proud of the workshop and of value. Received an e-mail the other day on one of the teams. Link to a story from Sacred Heart. 2 athletes date rape. He wrote. Thank God we have you on our side. This data shows that some of the efforts and support from CCW understood that we are taking a scientific approach. Showed that guys can change and benefit from education. Students associated with this. Guys respect us. Come talk to him all the time. Given 4 or 5 articles about the topic. Buy into this mentality that we can make better decisions. Can be protectors. Going to come to our end of the year event. We have this. Fairly large sample for this study. Study came out last week.. how much more hypermasculine these male athletes are. Still havent analyzed the standardized measures yet, but hope to have these results in the coming months. Clear link between societal implications and health risks for males. What is involved with being a real man? Today violent aggressive risk taking male hurts self and others. Many people, males and females, interested in these topics. Been a nice experience. No stereotyping occurring. Many of the statements are meaningful. Barriers to the workshops? Teams have been able to work with Jason approached them. Think of it as a pilot study. Asked teams if they would be willing to do this. The administration hasnt made this as a program. The NCAA requires a program such as this. More basic. Doing a favor to the administration and the athletic department. Took a long time to get in with the athletes. Slow gradual process from distrust (are you judging our guys? Coming in on a high horse)? Some did on a voluntary basis. A year ago the administration was talking about a Mens Center. Had a graduate assistant. Think we should get into the dorms. Contacted different people at different times passive responses. Joanne: CCW . We have this mens initiative and want to come into the dorms. Jason would like us to get more involved. This is one of those areas where we have to push a bit. Feels slow to us. Cost effective program. Had a grad assistant last semester. Was fantastic. No current funds for a grad assistant this semester. Having the athletes being an identifiable group .. focus on getting this instituted into the future. Idea: go to grants and funded research for money & diversity grants. Idea: now all the athletes have been trained. Want it institutionalized for all student athletes as freshman. Our intervention exists in the light of all intervention. Have tertiary interventions. Have fantastic services. Also Prevention based. William Fothergills group secondary intervention. Subtle difficulties. Jason primary prevention. Every guy . Healthy attitudes. Everybody can benefit from it. Still need a home. If the next step is wanting to go into the dorms. Consider discussion to get this program into the dorms. If hit her up now, could put that into the schedule. Also, Curriculum grants due soon (march 7th) and proposed to get stipend and resources to help tweak it and get it into a package. Would dorms be open to something that would only affect the male residents? Put something together for the females too. Thought about would workshops be better if were males and females too? Administration: feedback on positive and negative aspects of these trainings. Idea that this is a dangerous issue? Committee responsibility: support. This is a way to improve the health of this campus community. Support needed from CCW: 1) need to analyze data, 2) apply funding resources, 3) presentations 4) Office of Victim Services. They are very interested in programs and research on these types of things. 5) get some help. Want to be an ally of the womens center. Value the idea of the womens center model. Think that our services align with womens center. Want the blessings of the womens center. These intellectual disagreements.. think that can still have those intellectual disagreements.. then lets intervene at different levels. Suggest meeting with Jacqueline and Rosa. April 21st: holding a 5K on CCSUs campus, Enough a race against violence. Krystal has partnered with the Hartford marathon foundation. A timing company comes in. A lot of people need timed races. Also having a speak out at the end. Inviting people who have experienced all types of violence to speak out. CCW co-sponsor. Sart team co-sponsor? Mens thing tied into that? Good publicity for this whole thing. The Hartford Marathon will do 100 m dash for men, etc? Could do team races. Could do 100 m dash race in her shoes. Could really publicize and advertise that. Krystal needs to know sooner rather than later. A program book coming out and someone who is donating graphic design skills and sponsorship information. Will have fliers, e-mail blasts, etc. Also a fundraiser for the sexual assault crisis center. Have radio stations who have agreed to publicize this, etc. Alums of the program interested? Men do a walk? Picture of their sister, mother, etc.? or a 100 m dash in womens shoes literally. Concern, where would we stand in relation to the event? Mens initiative sub-committee would hope that we would have a microphone. Opportunity to bring in speakers in the whole shoe. Want Paul Schlickman, and press, for men to stand and say that we dont accept the violence. Krystal: if get a good group of people to come, then get people to come out and do the walk through campus, get media people to cover that. As women how they feel about this. Have a couple of the guys interviewed for this. Guys could run and help with refreshments, volunteers, etc. 7. Women's Center Report Rosa indicated that there are several new support groups that have been started by the Womens Center. 8. New Business: 9. Announcements: a.Our next meeting is scheduled for: Monday, March 12, 2012; 12:15 PM - 1:30 PM Std Ctr 1849. b.
